SONIC RUNS & CAMPING
I wanted to write the story of how Blake & I met & ultimately how our dating relationship started. It’s kind of a long story, so I’ve split it into parts– this is part 2.
None of us had smart phones yet. What we had was good for playing the game Snake & texting where you had to push the same button three times to type the letter C. Blake would text me—always when he was bored in class. What r u doing? When I got one of his texts during a math class, my spirits found even more joy than normal, as I hate math. (Side note: The other night, I had a dream that I had to go back to college because it was discovered I was missing a lot of credits. Every class I had to take was math—all at the same time. This is literally my worst 1st world problem nightmare.) I’d text him what time I’d be back at my dorm, & he’d pick me up for a Sonic happy hour run. One Ocean Water & one unsweet peach tea. We’d stay at Sonic & talk—not flirty talk but honest, get-to-know-each-other talk. We were both from Tyler but had grown up in different circles. I don’t think we ever even hugged during those days. It was basic texting, lots of Sonic runs, & fun conversation.
Blake had a girlfriend. They had met at the summer camp they both worked that year, & she went to A&M, but I didn’t know her. She was also from Tyler. I wasn’t looking for a boyfriend, so this didn’t phase me at first. Even when I finally owned the fact that I was head over heels for the guy, I kept it to myself because I didn’t want to mess up our Sonic friendship. My birthday was on a Saturday that September, & a group of us decided to go camping. Elizabeth was visiting Blake for the weekend, too. Since Ramie had a dorm room to herself, it was the designated sleepover room. Ramie, Elizabeth, our friend Allison, & I were having a silly good time. Even though it was becoming more & more obvious to me that my feelings for Blake was more than a short-lived crush, in my mind he was taken & that was that, & if I wanted to be friends with him, I needed to be a good friend to her. And it was easy because she was really nice! When Blake broke up with her before the camping trip, it was a surprise to all of us, & when we still ALL went camping, we banded together like a tight nit group of girlfriends for the car ride while the guys followed. Blake & I hardly spoke that night except for when he handed me an iTunes gift card through the car window & said a quick happy birthday. Everyone made it a fun night—there was ice cream cake & guitar playing—but I didn’t like how sad I was feeling seeing Blake & Elizabeth spend most of the night down by the lake talking. It wasn’t long at all before they were back together, & our friendship resumed with car rides & Sonic like nothing had ever happened.
